You're like a child

You're like a child
Ask me to write you a song
Never give me a damn
There are lots of pain in me will start over again
They'll start again, they'll start again, they'll start again

Writing song is easy
Describing you is hard
Worry that once I write
The persistence that I have for wanting you
All will be dug out by you
All will be dug out, All will be dug out

Decision was made
It's no way to turn back
It's clear to myself
There are lots of pain in me, will start over again
They'll start again, they'll start again, they'll start again

To decide is easy
Waiting is too hard
Worry that once I wait
All the maturity and sedateness learned throughout the years
All will be dissolved, All will be dissolved, All will be dissolved

Working hard is easy, making money is difficult.
Having an affair is easy, maintaining family is difficult.
Loving you is easy, getting along is difficult.
Decision is easy, but waiting is always hard.

You’re like a child
You’re like a child
Ask me to write you a song
You’re like a child

Myth of Lilith

According to Jewish folklore, Lilith was the first wife of Adam.  She was created at the same time and from the same earth as Adam.  She was banished from the Garden of Eden when she refused to make herself subservient to Adam (specifically, she refused to get into the missionary position with him during sex).  When she was cast out, she was made into a demon figure, and Adam was given a second wife, Eve, who was fashioned from his rib to ensure her obedience to her man.

Lilith's existence as a historical person depends on a reading of Genesis 1 apart from Genesis 2. The woman created as Adam's equal in Genesis 1 is said to be Lilith and the woman created subservient (from Adam's rib) in Genesis 2 is said to be Eve.

According to the myth of Lilith, she left Adam because he insisted that she submit to him. She spoke the Divine Name and gained such power that she became an angel, but when God told her to return to Adam, she refused and became a demon. She is cast as the epitome of the evil seductress who works in league with Satan to torment and destroy Adam's offspring.

Lilith is not mentioned in Genesis because insinuating her presence overthrows the biblical picture of Adam and Eve living close to the Creator in Paradise. This paradise was lost due to disobedience of God's command given to them 'not to eat', not because Lilith refused to take the missionary position with Adam.

Moment of Truth

The term 'Moment of Truth' was coined by Jan Carlzon, who managed the Scandinavian SAS Airlines. He used the term to mean those moments in which important brand impressions are formed and where there is significant opportunity for good or bad impressions to be made.

Moments of Truth often happen when they are not thought to occur, in odd interfaces with staff and moments with products. First impressions are often critical moments. When customers have certain expectations and they are disappointed, then they can form very negative impressions or feel a sense of betrayal that sends them into destructive desires for retribution.

There are two fundamental ideas behind the use of Moments of Truth in management practices.
  • The elimination of all UNNECESSARY Moments of Truth – everywhere.
  • The repeatable delivery of Moments of Magic for each Moment of Truth that cannot otherwise be eliminated.
 What are Moments of Truth in Process?

From the process perspective, Moments of Truth exist anywhere the customer touches the process or the process touches the customer. Any contact with the customer – any contact – is a Moment of Truth.

Identifying, eliminating and improving Moments of Truth can be a daunting task for many organizations. It requires an organization to move away from the ingrained internal perspective to the external perspective – the Outside-In perspective of the customer.

Identifying Moments of Truth will – without a doubt – lead to the discovery that many of our processes are fundamentally flawed. The elimination of unnecessary Moments of Truth will impose change on the organization, although the good news is that the resistance to this change will not come from the front lines. They are already living with the flaws in our processes so removing those flaws will typically be well received and often has knock-on effects of improved morale, loyalty and job satisfaction.

For many managers the story is much different.  The change that identifying Moments of Truth (then challenging them) brings to them will often require a fundamental shift in how they perceive the purpose of the organization, their job function, and their entire way of directing, overseeing and supporting their staff.  While for some managers and executive managers this is a much needed breath of fresh air, for many it is simply one more thing to be discounted, ignored, and tacitly resisted.

If once the Moment of Truth is lost badly, it will be very difficult to make people recover back from this.

Keep smiling ...

Most of the year are unremarkable.  They begin and they end with no lasting memories made in between.  Most days have no impact on the course of life until we meet someone someday somehow.  When we meet, perhaps it is raining, perhaps it is sunny.  We have the same anxiety, the same enthusiasm.  We smile to each other because finally we meet.  Sometimes, we are eager to meet someone, and sometimes we are avid for meeting someone again, however that someone is so departed that is not able to meet again.

So should we cherish each of our encounter?  Should we be grateful to have the chance to know each other?  And then, we should remember to say "See you soon ……" when we leave.

Keep smiling when we meet, keep smiling when we depart.

Now I know it has been a while
And people change like passing smiles
Turn their back on all they have said
And promises they have made

Two years have slowly passed us by
Two years that changed both our lives
But one thing still remains the same
That's the promises that we made

"Will you write to me everyday ? Will you think of me everyday ?
When you hear this song on the radio , Will you think of me even more?"

"Yes, I will."

And as your train pulls into view
I catch a fleeting glimpse of you
As you wave to me "Hallo"
Just to say you are home

And as I hold you here tonight
Everything just seems so right
As the radio plays our song
Our love goes on

La …… La ……

To fulfill by forsaking

There is a kind of affection but without serendipity and there is a kind of fulfillment by way of forsaking.

A person who never want to lost you may not be the one who really love you or loyal to you.  Sometimes it is only a confused mind with strong possessive impulse.  They may do things hurting others without benefit themselves and at the same time take it for granted.  If a person always think that "once I have it, I am not going to let go ever and forever", then this person is only a paranoiac of possession.  Trying to get the eternal assurance of love will only result in further astray.

To love something means to learn how to appreciate it, to cherish it and to make it precious.  To care someone means to let that someone delighted.  Because this person's emotions will bring turbulence to your emotions too.  That's why there is a saying "I feel glad because you are happy".  Loving a person is to let her/him to live in happiness.  This will make the affection more sincere.  If you are not able to do that, then you may have to let go.  Therefore sometimes, we need to learn how to forsake.  Because giving up is also a kind of beauty.

Apotheosis

Even in this information flooding ages, apotheosis is still going on with stupidity neglecting facts.  Take for an example of Thomas Edison.  Was he a genius inventor or just a greedy capitalist?

You may know that Edison’s dogged determination drove him to try a thousand different filaments before he invented the light bulb.  We often think of this as emblematic of American hard work and dedication. But in truth, Edison was a slob who could not stand to organize his work or perform proper research. So instead of figuring out how to make the light bulb work better, he literally tried everything lying around until he stumbled on the right filament. That is not dedication.   People had been “inventing” the light bulb for about seventy years when Edison came along and made one good enough to mass produce and sell.  Bamboo, carbon, and carbonized bamboo filaments were all used by earlier inventors.  And Edison’s team, notably Lewis Latimer, made significant contributions to Edison’s “achievement.”

But that is not all.  Back then, there was a big argument between Edison and a man called Nicola Tesla about the better type of electricity; AC (alternating current) and DC (directional current). To cut a long argument short, the AC is better the way we use it and we in fact use AC electricity.  But anyway, Nicola Tesla was for AC electricity and proved its power by lighting a lot of streets with one flick of a switch at a World Fair.  Edison was for DC electricity.  To prove DC was "safer" than AC, he electrocuted animals with AC electricity (including an elephant) and "invented" the Westinghouse Chair, an electric chair which used AC electricity. Of course, both AC and DC electricity will electrocute you, there is no difference in that respect.  But Edison was the jerk who tortured animals and people alike to get his point across.

Thomas Edison was a selfish individual and quite a ruthless businessman who fought ferociously to defeat his competitors in the battle of inventions.  Selfishness is nothing uncommon, after all it is human nature.  But the question is, if we take Thomas Edison to a God like inventor and deviate from facts, then we easily neglect that many good innovation development had been suppressed by his selfishness.

In our age, Apotheosis by now should be antique.  A successful business man already got the monetary reward in his life and there is no need to make him become God.  This is because it is hard to measure his way of defending his own benefit is actually promoting innovations or retarding them instead.  This should also apply to Steve Jobs and Bill Gate.

Nonetheless, is a inventor must be a selfish person in order to get recognition?  This may not be the case.  A good example is Benjamin Franklin.  He was also unequaled in America as an inventor until Thomas Edison.  He invented the Franklin stove, bifocal eyeglasses and the lightning rod.  Franklin was not greedy about his inventions, preferring to have them used freely for the comfort and convenience of everyone.  Thomas Jefferson called Benjamin Franklin “the greatest man and ornament of the age and country in which he lived.”

Everything I do ...

I want you to know how much I love you.  You have given a meaning to my life that I had no right to expect, that no one can ever take from me.  I love you so much.  And I want you to promise me something.  I do not want you to ever worry about me.  And if anything should happen, I am gonna be okay.  And everything is gonna be all right.  And I have no regrets.  And I want you to feel the same way ......

Meet Joe Black · Father to Daughter

I am not a nice person

In fact, I am extremely selfish.  I want you to be happy because I can only feel happy when the person I care feel good.

I am exceedingly greedy.  I am not easy to satisfy with relationship that is only barter.  I want something more.  Some bonding that is not able to be bought.

I am remarkably cold.  I would support you to have your own dream.  I do not need to be sticking to each other all the time.  I don't care the detail of everyday life.  Even if we are apart in different places, as long as I believe you are with me then I feel warm and contented.

Silent whisper, silent tear ...

A better ending for the movie - The 3 Idiots should be:

Having lost contact with Wangdu (taking Rancho's identity to study), who disappeared during the graduation party and went into seclusion, Raju and Farhan (Wangdu's best friend in Engineering College) begin a journey to find him as Rancho.  When they find Rancho's house in Shimla, they find a completely different Rancho. From him they come to know that their friend was in fact only a destitute servant boy "Chhote" who loved learning, while he, the real Rancho, disliked study. The real Rancho's old man agreed to let the servant boy study in Rancho's place instead of laboring. In return, the real Rancho would pocket the qualifications and after graduating, the servant boy has to cease all contact with the school in order not to reveal this secret, especially to people related to Imperial College of Engineering.  Although Wangdu understand this is a very selfish wish of the old man, the old man is still the one who brought him up and he has to keep this secret to repay the old man.

The real Rancho reveals that Chhote (that is Wangdu) is now a school-teacher in Ladakh.  Raju and Farhan decide to tell Wangdu's lover in college - Pia.  And Pia is just going to marry a guy she does not really love.  For 10 years, Pia has not been able to contact with Wangdu.  Wangdu is just like vanished in her universe.  Now she suddenly gets his news from Raju and Farthan.  She have been waiting for Wangdu and delaying her marriage for long last.  As a brave girl, she decides to join Raju and Farthan to meet Wangdu.  She is in great pain and doubts during the journey because Wangdu never approaches her since 10 years.  If he ever loves her, why he disappeared like a meteor in the summer night.

Certainly, Pia never imagines the pain in Wangdu's heart is no less than hers.  After he left Imperial College of Engineering, Wangdu had to fulfill his commitment to the real Rancho's old man that he must not reveal the secret.   Throughout 10 years, in all those sleepless nights, he missed Pia, he wanted Pia.   Especially when nights are long and friends are few, he sat by his window and thought of her.  A silent whisper, a silent tear, with all his heart he wished she were there.    And he prepares his love for her will be brought with him to the grave one day.   In one of the rooms, he puts all her photos on the walls and all the details of how they met and fell in love.

And Wangdu never forgets his friends.  He kept every copy of Farhan's wildlife photo collections.  He constantly reads Raju's blog only that he is bounded by his promise not to contact them.  Wangdu is like an elephant and never forgets.  He still cares for his friends.  And for certain, he never forgets Pia, his first love.

When Pia enters the room and finds the photos on the walls for all the years, she is completely stunned.  With mixed feelings of love, regrets and anger, she runs out of the room and asks Wangdu's assistant, Millimeter to lead her to Wangdu.  Finally, the lovers meet again and when Wangdu knows that the old man died and all the promises could now be released.  The two lovers finally kiss for the first time.

Once in the blue moon, the dreams come true ……

Why beliefs matter?

A simple and direct reason is:  Beliefs, no matter they are with right or wrong result, usually hinder constructive changes that are based on facts.

Beliefs lead to ideology without factual support will bring unnecessary suffering and disaster to other living organism in the planet.  In past history of mankind, beliefs were mostly religions as Catholics, Christians, Muslims, Buddhist.  Beliefs in modern term also should include all kind of ideology not based on facts.  One example is communism, they believed human nature would be contented to contribute their best and only take back what they need.  So a communist society neglects the brutal, selfish and animal aspect of human beings.  The tragedies of communism execution in Russia, China, North Korea, etc prove this ideology is very much deviated from facts beyond any doubt.

The other example is Environmentalists.  They conceive that climate becomes warmer (still a controversy in science) only because of human activities.  And they are always promoting the idea that Polar bears go to human community to find food is because global warming and the bears do not have enough snow and ice to live on.  They choose to ignore the fact that population of Polar bears increase 2 to 3 times after the 50s because illegal hunting was banned since then.   They see more Polar Bears wondering around is not the result that the bears is starving owing to not able to find food on land without ice covering (this thinking is already quite strange, without ice on the ground, should be much easier to find food for all kind of animals even the Polar Bears).  This is the result of over populated Polar Bears, so many of them need to find food away from their original habitation.  Again, Environmentalists perform what they do best, confusing correlation to causation.

For certain, those who embracing beliefs tightly are Creationists.   Creationists are always asking this question, you have your belief and they have their belief, why some Scientists are so against religion.  The danger of beliefs is that people with beliefs ignore facts and rational thinking.  This attitude perhaps is good for human in ancient time.  It helps to make decision fast no matter it is right or not.  We know that in some life or death situation, fast decision (maybe it is proven wrong later) still get a better chance of survival (when not counting about the quality of survival).  Our genes would not care if we lost both of our legs and arms, as long as we are still able to reproduce and can have descendants, then the survival mechanism (even it causes great pain and suffering) is still a better strategy for survival neglecting the quality of well-being.

The experience of inhabitants in Easter Island could show how the beliefs of dead ancestors lead to cannibalism:

In daily life, we may still utilize belief to facilitate our decision process and to make lives easier.  But we need to be very cautious not to mix beliefs with facts.  Take for an example, we can always choose not to bring one of our friends to picnic because we "believe" every time we bring him along, it rains.  However, we have to distinguish that the phenomenon is just co-incident and is nothing to do with causation.  With this kind of understanding, we can still live happily although we know in our heart that this belief is just a "joke" to make us feel comfortable.  But if this belief is not controlled well, it may lead to sufferings too.  Say, when one day a drought in our area happens, this belief may encourage believers to pull this friend out to attract rain no matter he is willing to go out or not.  If by then, he is not able to bring along any rain, we may even angry with him and think he is not co-operating and terrible things on him may follow ......

After all, there needs not an explanation to everything we don't understand yet.  Could we, human just humbly say that "We don't know the answer yet"?  rather than making up a supernatural creature who has, and is all the answers.  Admitting we don't know should be much better than giving an irresponsible wrong answer from beliefs that are rooted from a primitive evolution misfire in our human mind.

Science is not a belief

There is always a confusion among Creationists regarding science.  They take science as a belief or another opinion.  They equalize science as what they believe that human is created by God without factual support.   But in fact, science never could be a relief because science is only methods of thinking and perhaps more precisely, methods or tools to find out the fact.

A simple analogy for this is like that: when 2 person X and Y see a swallow flying in the direction towards their house in middle of a field with a forest nearby.  X loves swallow very much and "feels" (or subjectively hoping) that the swallow should like their house because their house was so nicely built, the smell is good, the color is soft (nothing really related to what is attractive to the swallow).  So X believes that the swallow must be flying into his house as it is flying to that direction and is going to make a nest inside their house.

Y may also share the same feeling of X, but he knows that feeling is one thing, and fact is another.  So he makes a ladder and using it to search around the house inch by inch, including the roof and every corner.  But finally, he finds nothing related to swallow nest.  Y declares that that is no swallow nest in their house while X still strongly believes that the swallow nest is somewhere inside the house that Y was not able to find it.  And then both person see that the swallow is just flying past their house to the forest.

The ladder in this story is science.  It is the tools for Y to find out the fact and not relying on beliefs.  X can still have strong belief that Y did not find the swallow nest because he is not searching the house thoroughly or just neglecting to accept the fact.

Communism could be a belief because it has assumptions that human are born equal while some are more equal.  And communists also believe that human nature could be unselfish and like to share everything if they are taught correctly.  But we all know that now, this belief is completely against the fact of human nature from the evolution of selfish genes.

Environmentalist could also be a belief because they do not know how to distinguish correlation from causation to climates.  They just simply believe human is the major causes for all the changes of climate without adequate evidences.

Nonetheless science could not be a belief.  Because it is only a tool or a way to find out the fact.  The tool could be improved when knowledge increase.   According to the Oxford English Dictionary says that scientific method is: "a method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses."

Scientific inquiry is generally intended to be as objective as possible, to reduce biased (from feelings, from preference, from beliefs without root) interpretations of results.  Another basic expectation is to document, archive and share all data and methodology so they are available for careful scrutiny by other scientists, giving them the opportunity to verify results by attempting to reproduce them. This practice, called full disclosure, also allows statistical measures of the reliability of these data to be established.  Not just saying that this is God's mysteries that we, as a human are not able to understand.

Many creationists do not accept a generally adopted way in science to find out fact by logical induction and deduction.  Just like this one: a beautiful but bigoted and snobbish woman - Wendy Wright.  What a shameful waste!

When Wendy Wright was asking for the evidence of evolution, Dr. Richard Dawkins asked her to visit museums and to read more text book about the evolution evidences.  She thought she had read enough and accursed Darwinist disguising their mistakes about the missing piece of the evolution theory.  And she kept saying that there should be a lot of evidences in the fossils to show intermediate species before evolving to human.  The fact is, there are really a lot of evidences about evolution out there, but her incomplete information from Christian organizations still remains in the 30s or 40s.

In addition, the level of evidences she required is far beyond a normal straight and reasonable person's thinking.  It seems that she will be satisfied only if she could watch a monkey evolving in front of her eyes to become a human or else all the evidences by logical deduction will be counted as inadequate or insignificant.  With this kind of evidence requirement, I think even no one could prove to her, the earth is in fact a globe but not flat.  Because no one could ever show her in front of her eyes that the earth is round instead of flat.  She will always feel that that the ground is flat as all of us do.  And the earth is too large for her or as a human to perceive the earth is really round when we walk on the ground, sit on the ground, build things on the ground.  But the evidences we have, are by experimental traveling from one place to another place pointing to the same direction and we go back to the original point.   We may not practice this by ourselves, but we have to admit that it is a fact when many people tried it and got the same result.  And also with this knowledge (not belief) of fact about the shape of earth, human developed many useful tools to improve our lives, such as flying crafts, ships, maps, satellites etc.

This is similar to evolution, human (including Wendy Wright) "feelings" also are never able to perceive events occurred over million of years step by step with small mutations unless through logical reasoning and scientific tools.  When we find many fossils of species that bridging the gaps of fishes evolving to amphibian, we will be quite certain by induction that there will be gaps of species evolving to human to be found someday, somehow.

Moreover, one of Wendy's major fault about DNA is that: she thought because individual human's DNA is different to each other, that there must be a designer or creator to make this difference.  Or else without a creator, all human should be the same.   This argument was utilized by her repeatedly and seems she thought she is smart about this.  But this argument is just a fallacy of thinking.

Firstly, if simply judging and concluding that because individual human is "unique" to each other then there must be a creator, this is certainly a logical mistake.  This is as laughable as seeing a creature with 2 feet walking on the ground, and concluded that the creature must be a human.  Everyone with sensible mind will know that, creature walking with 2 feet could be a chicken, a penguin, or many other kind of animals.  So this deduction is at most a kind of belief or subjective wishes without any relation to the fact.

Secondly, she only noticed the minor difference of human's DNA and forgot the 99.9% of human DNA are the same.  If the uniqueness of each individual human shows that there must be a creator, then how about the 99.9% similarities of human?  Is that shows 99 times more that there should not be a creator because they are identical.  However, for those who respect science, we know that this is that minute difference of DNA (in Darwinian's term, this is the mutation) will make evolution possible.  Because if a specie is so stable, that all the members' DNA is 100% the same, this specie will not get a chance to survive in longer term.  The environment of Earth is everlasting changing, without deviation of DNA, natural selection will remain only 1 outcome - the specie will be extincted sooner or later.  Say, this super stable specie survives so successfully in a period of time, that they grow to huge population (growing in population is also an environmental change) with brutal competition on exactly same resources (because they are 100% the same) and hence no one could survive.  The other scenario is that, as if this super stable specie faces a small change of environment, they will not stand a chance to survive because they are 100% the same.  One of them not able to survive this environmental change, no other will be able to.

Moreover, Wendy Wright on one hand accused some people disguising the evidences against Darwinism which was mostly happened in the 20s or 30s, on the other hand, she also did not told the whole truth about the incident that she was sentenced to jail because of "just praying" outside an Abortion Clinic.

After all, ways of searching facts are never able to become a belief as a belief of a supernatural creator.

On feet or on knees ...

And once we clued in to the fact that life is finite, the thought of losing it didn't scare us anymore.  The end comes no matter what.  The only thing that matters is how do you want to go out?  On your feet or on your knees?

Now as I came in here, I heard those words...cradle of leadership.  Well, when the bough breaks, the cradle will fall.  And it has fallen here, it has fallen!  Makers of men, creators of leaders, be careful what kind of leaders you're producing here.

I don't know if Charlie's silence here today is right or wrong; I'm no judge or jury.  But I can tell you this: he won't sell anybody out to buy his future!  And that my friends is called integrity, that's called courage.  Now that's the stuff leaders should be made of.

Now I have come to the crossroads in my life.  I always knew what the right path was.  Without exception, I knew.  But I never took it, you know why?  It was too damn hard.

Now here's Charlie; he's come to the crossroads.  He has chosen a path, it's the right path.  It's a path made of principle, that leads to character.  Let him continue on his journey.  You hold this boy's future in your hands, committee! It's a valuable future.  Believe me!  Don't destroy... protect it...embrace it.  It's gonna make you proud some day... I promise you.

The Cup or the Coffee ...

People complaint about stress in work and life is somewhat like when they are offered with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite.  Most of the people pick on the nice looking expensive cups, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. This is normal for people to want only the best for themselves, but that is the source of the problems and stress.

Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink.  What all of us really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but we consciously went for the best cups...  And then we began eyeing each other's cups.

Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have, does not define, nor change the quality of life we live.

Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee.  Savor the coffee, not the cups!  The happiest people do not have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.

Live simply.  Love generously.  Care deeply.  Speak kindly ...

Simply Love ...

Shadowland ...

We live in the shadowlands.
Sun is always shining somewhere else...
around a bend in the road...
over the brow of a hill.
C.S. Lewis

The farthest distance in the world
is not the space between life and death.
But that you don't know I love you
while I am standing in front of you.

The farthest distance in the world
is not that you don't know I love you
while I am standing in front of you.
But that we can't be together
though we both love each other.

The farthest distance in the world
is not that we can't be together
while we both love each other.
But that I have to pretend that
I don't care about you at all
while I can't help missing you.

The farthest distance in the world
is not that I have to pretend that
I don't care about you at all
while I can't help missing you.
But that you dig an unsurpassable gap
between you and your lover
with an indifferent heart.

Innovation 104

How would you design the controls for a VCR (Video Cassette Recorder)?

It was said this is a popular interview question in many Tech companies like Microsoft, Google, etc.  In fact, the complexity of setting the right time to record TV programs is a real problem that VCR manufacturers are keen to solve for the past 2 decades.  There are numerous solutions designed throughout the years, including LED or LCD panels on the VCR, on-screen displays, G-Code, VideoPlus+ and ShowView etc.  Yet still correctly recording a specific program was somewhat complex operation for many people and none of the solutions really improve the situation a lot.

Below is the model answer suggested from the book "How Would You Move Mount Fuji?" by William Poundstone:

For the sake of argument, let's assume that consumer studies identify a market niche willing to pay for an easy-to-use VCR. It would also be helpful to know whether these potential customers really use all the features that most VCRs provide. How often do people program to record more than a week ahead? More than twenty-four hours ahead? Dropping some features could lead to an easier interface. As a rough sketch, here's how a plausible "easy" interface might work: The VCR box has only five buttons (play, pause, fast-forward, rewind, and eject). These are really just backups so that you can play tapes should the remote control fall behind the couch. The VCR box has no display (saving money). All the programming is done with the remote and on-screen menus. The remote has one button and one "joystick." The joystick is like those found on some monitors or on the keyboard in some laptops. It is hardly more than a button itself. You can move it in all directions in order to control an on-screen cursor. The button is for selecting. In essence, the remote is a mouse that you hold in your hand.

To program the VCR, you pick up the remote and touch either the joystick or the button. This "wakes up" the VCR (if it's off) and superimposes a menu/wizard/control panel on the TV screen. This interface lets you play tapes, record a program, and set the time (if for some reason it can't be synchronized automatically). The VCR downloads a graphical TV schedule and lets you simply point and click on the shows you want to record.  Since the selling point for all this is the two-button simplicity, a great deal of attention should go to the look and feel of the remote control. It should not look like other remotes. If the market is young people, maybe it should look "cool," sort of like an iMac. If the market is retirees, make sure the joystick and buttons are easy to control for people.
In another way to figure the programing problem of a VCR, the basic question should be asked is: what is the easiest way for a person to do the recording correctly?  A simple answer is to find a capable person who is always available to do it for him, right?

Most of the time, when people are not at their home and in somewhere with friends or at work, they may come across that there are something interesting will be shown on TV today or in future suddenly from friends, newspaper, or co-workers.  So the impulses to record some TV programs are usually stipulated when they are not at home.  For certain, the most convenient way to do the recording is to call back home for someone to start the recording or program the VCR for them.  Or the other way is to call some friends they know that he/she will be at home and is willing to do it for them, although in most of the case, this is even harder to find that someone.

Deduced from the above, the most ease-to-use VCR control should be something that people could tell it to do what they want especially when they are outside in somewhere not near to the VCR.   In reality, although the infrastructures are all here, such as phone line, low cost microprocessors,  voice recognition, etc.   However, voice recognition is never performed very well even not considering the cost of developing the system.

Then, how about the second best thing that a mobile phone could do in sending instructions.  That is the text function (the SMS - short message system).  The VCR control could be designed with a mobile phone SMS module built-in to receive text messages.   Simple instructions could be set like this:

channel 8, record 19:00, stop 20:32, today
Or for even simpler instruction, it could be like this:

ch 8, rec 19.00, stop 20.32, mar 30
The VCR control could read the sentence and "understand" it and execute the commands accordingly.  Then the VCR remote control and the box will remain just only five buttons (play, pause,fast-forward, rewind, and eject).

Or it could be in the other way around, the VCR itself could be connected to the land line with text function or with a SMS card module inside.

This could be the simplest way to control something need to be set the schedule time.  The idea was first come from trying to control the Air Conditioner to start up cooling 15 to 30 minutes before family members arriving home.  But it seems this could also be used in controlling VCR.

Innovation 103

Wireless Energy Transfer

This idea was first developed when learning Faraday’s law about magnetic induction.  The beginning of the thought was just trying to make a wireless battery charger.  That is to say, the battery could be charged up without physically connected to anything.  The device with the battery could be charged up in anywhere within the proximity of the wireless charger.  The principle behind is by induction.  There are many ways to do it, such as magnetic induction (and there are already products for charging mobile phone), radiation, solar cell etc.  This article will only focus on 2 “new” concepts:

Microwave Resonance:

Similar to the working principle of a microwave oven.  But in a microwave oven, the wavelength of microwave is so chosen to have the resonance frequency with water molecules.  Typical microwave radiation (at 2450 MHz) is non-ionizing, and in sufficient intensity will simply cause the molecules in matter to vibrate, thereby causing friction, which produces the heat that cooks the food.  So for charging a battery, a receptor with corresponding frequency built in it.  With a microwave generator sending out the wave in the 3-dimensional space, the receptor with the right resonance frequency will absorb the energy and transform it into electricity to charging up the battery (i.e. convert into chemical energy).  The battery will send a signal to the Microwave generator and let the generator know its location.  Then the microwave generator will send out the microwave in this direction in order to reduce lost of energy in the air.  The estimated efficiency for this kind of energy transmission is low (less than 10%).  The design is already on the drawing board.

Hypothesis of variating gravitational field:

A specific mass variation frequency of an object (or particle) produces a variating gravitational field.  With the receptor so design to have resonance frequency with the variating gravitational field, then energy could be transmitted by gravitational field.  The changing of mass of an object or particle could be achieved by changing the speed of the particle.  This is from the famous equation proposed by Albert Einstein,
                Where E = Energy
                          m = mass
                          c  = velocity of light

When a particle reaches certain velocity near the speed of light, the mass of the particle will alter significantly.  And through the control of the speed of the particle, the mass of the particle could be manipulated.  One way is by altering the electric field to a high speed particle carrying electric charges (either positive or negative charges), and hence the speed of the particle could be increased and decreased according to the frequency of the changing electric field.

                Where    m = relativistic mass
                              M = invariant mass
                              v  = velocity of the object
                              c  = velocity of light

The concept is just like storing the kinetic energy in flywheel.  As matter of fact flywheel storage of energy is already vastly adopted in many machines.

Where

   E = Kinetic energy (Joules)
   m = mass (kg)
   v = velocity (m/s)
   I = moment of inertia (kg/m²)
  ω = angular velocity (rad/s)

For certain, this area still requires great amount of research work.  But the whole concept is trying to find a way to transmit energy wirelessly other than radiation.  Although in nature of the Earth, radiation of the Sun rays are already one kind of wireless energy transmission, unfortunately this energy transmission channel is affected too much by the weather condition and required big surfaces to collect.  That makes solar energy is still far ahead to be in practical and meaningful usage.

If a new way of wireless transmission of energy could be found with a stable penetration power to the ground of the Earth from the space, then the efficiency of this energy transmission would become a small issue.  Just to think about hundreds or even thousands of those transmitters could be placed in the orbit of the sun to absorb the radiation energy from the sun.  Then the energy absorbed could be transformed to, say variation gravitational field, and be transferred back to earth wirelessly.  The energy could be utilized to power the electricity generators in power plants.

Perhaps more resources should be put in the research for wireless transmission of energy would be even more promising than trying to utilize wind, sola or wave energy.

Always on my mind ...

嬌軀柔柔輕偎依
無言默默短歌吟
相偕足跡泥上印
回首化成心內痕

You are always on my mind

Maybe I didn't treat you
Quite as good as I should have
Maybe I didn't love you
Quite as often as I could have
Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Maybe I didn't hold you
All those lonely, lonely times
And I guess I never told you
I'm so happy that you're mine

If I made you feel second best
Girl I'm so sorry I was blind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Tell me, tell me that your sweet love hasn't died
Give me, give me one more chance to keep you satisfied
....... satisfied

Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Innovation 102

Perhaps many people have this kind of experiences:
  • Forgot to lock the car that they thought they have locked it before going for a dinner or movie .  And after an hour or two when they got back, all the valuable things inside the car were stolen.
  • From then on they will never trust themselves if they have locked the lock.  They become paranoid about that if they have locked the locks or not.  So even when they clearly remember they left their car locked, but they still doubt themselves if they have locked it.  And the pathetic result is, no matter how far they already left, they still want to go back and check.
  • This paranoid feeling extends to other aspect of life about locks.  They will want to check if their homes, their offices, their lockers, etc., are locked after they already left for quite some time.
The above situations should be very common especially in a big city where locks are essential, right?  Locks are often locked unconsciously especially when there are interruption during the locking moment, such as a phone call, friend’s talking, something is chasing, in a hurry, getting to a new place, etc.

Going back to check the lock condition is always worthwhile when possible as the result of the leaving doors unlock could be devastating and the lost and damages may not be recoverable.  However, the probability of bad things happen is in fact not very high, it is really a waste of time and effort to go back every time to check.

Based on this, this idea was developed long ago: a key (with the lock) with an indicator on it to show the status of the lock.  For a mechanical lock, just some not very complicated mechanism could already make the key got this indication.

Mechanical Indicator
For remote control key system, it will be a matter of electronic feedback system designing into the remote control and the indication will be handy.

Electronic Indication
With the lock status indication (for example, unlocked - red, locked - green), the keys owner will only have to check the keys in order to know the condition of the lock and that will not require them to walk back from far away to check the lock again.

Already had discussed these designs with some lock manufacturers, but at time they were not interested.  The exact reasons were unknown, but there was a worry that there might have some legal problems if the indicator on the keys is not 100% fool proof.  Some users may claim the lock company for misleading information and cause them damages or lost.  However, this could always be taken care of by a disclaimer.

Anyway, this is still the invention not be realized yet.

Butterfly effect

Does the Flap of a Butterfly’s Wings in Brazil Set off a Tornado in Texas?
Edward Norton Lorenz

Everything has its cause.  But are cause and effect fair?  In the macro sense, causation may seem fair.  Things are happened because there must have some reasons.  However down to an individual level, the effects act upon us may not related to what we did before.  Other people’s work done acts upon us, and we have to take it voluntarily or involuntarily.

In fact, cause and effect is operating in an indifferent way without limit.  It could not be said to be fair or unfair, it just operate “cruelly” or “peacefully” in indifference.  Bearing this in mind, we human should be more humble and should not have any delusion that we could save the world by our subjective will.

Perhaps this is what we should try:
Let us live one day at a time;
Enjoy one moment at an instant;
Accepting things that we cannot change;
Courage to change the things we can;
Taking this sinful world as it is,
not as we would have it;
Trusting that we will make a difference
if we don’t surrender to indifference;
That we may be reasonably happy in this life ……

Innovation 101

This simple idea was developed back in 1996.  At time, the design was stipulated when seeing the grannies (with or without wheelchairs) trying to cross a road to a hospital.  They already took a taxi to the nearest point to a hospital or clinic.  However, they still needed to cross the road to reach there.  They either had to walk through the pedestrian tunnels or flyovers with so many steps up and down or to take the risk to cross somewhere without fence along the road.  This comes to a question: is that a must for pedestrian to walk up stairs or should let the vehicles do the up-slope?  So a concept begins ……

The purpose of the design is trying to solve the problem stated below:
    1.  In the cross way, vehicles and pedestrians are always competing for the use of the road.  This is dangerous for all of the crossway users.

    2.  In general, the solution for the crossway to maintain the order (without considering the convenience of the users) is like that:

    • Installation of Traffic Lights.  But this did not solve the problem completely.  If the control for the traffic lights are not adaptive, the efficiency of the traffic flow will be reduced substantially.  And reckless drivers or pedestrian still may cause accident without somebody hurt.
    • Installation of pedestrian flyover or tunnels.  This solution causes pedestrian to walk up and down of long stairways.  In British influence countries, double deck buses are on the road.  That means, the pedestrian flyovers have to be at least 2 stories high.  And because of the service buried under the road, that also means, the pedestrian tunnels have to be 2 to 3 stories deep.  And this is not very welcomed by pedestrian although sometimes it is the only solution if space is not allowed.
    3.   With this design, just elevating the road for vehicles for two to three meters from the ground.  This achieves the complete separation of vehicles and pedestrian.  And the pedestrian will have less incentive of crossing the road with vehicle traffic as that of pedestrian tunnels and flyovers.

    The design:
    • Utilizing metal structure to pre-fabricate the components.  The Junction Flyover should stand more than 80 to 100 tons static load per lane (which is more than the load of 3 double deck buses).
    • The time for the installation of this flyover should be around 8 to 10 hours and with a few more hours for testing and commissioning.
    • The cost of the whole project should be less than US$ 2 million.
    Possible advantages of this system:
    • No need to build high rising flyover for vehicles.
    • Pedestrian just walk on flat level, no need to walk up or down stair way.  More convenient for pedestrian.
    • Pedestrian and Vehicles are separate completely.  The traffic light will only cater for controlling vehicles traffic.  The efficiency of traffic flow should be increased significantly.
    • Other space under the flyover could be utilized for facilities repair spots such as telephone switch boxes, main water pipe valves, gas main valves, etc.
    • For long straight main road, with this junction flyover, this may discourage speeding because it will be bumpy when passing through the junction at high speed.
    Possible disadvantages of this system:
    • The vehicles may use more energy because there are small up-hill slopes.
    • Straight road become bumpy.  This may be an advantage as state earlier.
    • Pedestrian may need to walk a bit farther to cross the road because the elevated road for vehicles may block some part of the road.
