Innovation 103

Wireless Energy Transfer

This idea was first developed when learning Faraday’s law about magnetic induction.  The beginning of the thought was just trying to make a wireless battery charger.  That is to say, the battery could be charged up without physically connected to anything.  The device with the battery could be charged up in anywhere within the proximity of the wireless charger.  The principle behind is by induction.  There are many ways to do it, such as magnetic induction (and there are already products for charging mobile phone), radiation, solar cell etc.  This article will only focus on 2 “new” concepts:

Microwave Resonance:

Similar to the working principle of a microwave oven.  But in a microwave oven, the wavelength of microwave is so chosen to have the resonance frequency with water molecules.  Typical microwave radiation (at 2450 MHz) is non-ionizing, and in sufficient intensity will simply cause the molecules in matter to vibrate, thereby causing friction, which produces the heat that cooks the food.  So for charging a battery, a receptor with corresponding frequency built in it.  With a microwave generator sending out the wave in the 3-dimensional space, the receptor with the right resonance frequency will absorb the energy and transform it into electricity to charging up the battery (i.e. convert into chemical energy).  The battery will send a signal to the Microwave generator and let the generator know its location.  Then the microwave generator will send out the microwave in this direction in order to reduce lost of energy in the air.  The estimated efficiency for this kind of energy transmission is low (less than 10%).  The design is already on the drawing board.

Hypothesis of variating gravitational field:

A specific mass variation frequency of an object (or particle) produces a variating gravitational field.  With the receptor so design to have resonance frequency with the variating gravitational field, then energy could be transmitted by gravitational field.  The changing of mass of an object or particle could be achieved by changing the speed of the particle.  This is from the famous equation proposed by Albert Einstein,
                Where E = Energy
                          m = mass
                          c  = velocity of light

When a particle reaches certain velocity near the speed of light, the mass of the particle will alter significantly.  And through the control of the speed of the particle, the mass of the particle could be manipulated.  One way is by altering the electric field to a high speed particle carrying electric charges (either positive or negative charges), and hence the speed of the particle could be increased and decreased according to the frequency of the changing electric field.

                Where    m = relativistic mass
                              M = invariant mass
                              v  = velocity of the object
                              c  = velocity of light

The concept is just like storing the kinetic energy in flywheel.  As matter of fact flywheel storage of energy is already vastly adopted in many machines.

Where

   E = Kinetic energy (Joules)
   m = mass (kg)
   v = velocity (m/s)
   I = moment of inertia (kg/m²)
  ω = angular velocity (rad/s)

For certain, this area still requires great amount of research work.  But the whole concept is trying to find a way to transmit energy wirelessly other than radiation.  Although in nature of the Earth, radiation of the Sun rays are already one kind of wireless energy transmission, unfortunately this energy transmission channel is affected too much by the weather condition and required big surfaces to collect.  That makes solar energy is still far ahead to be in practical and meaningful usage.

If a new way of wireless transmission of energy could be found with a stable penetration power to the ground of the Earth from the space, then the efficiency of this energy transmission would become a small issue.  Just to think about hundreds or even thousands of those transmitters could be placed in the orbit of the sun to absorb the radiation energy from the sun.  Then the energy absorbed could be transformed to, say variation gravitational field, and be transferred back to earth wirelessly.  The energy could be utilized to power the electricity generators in power plants.

Perhaps more resources should be put in the research for wireless transmission of energy would be even more promising than trying to utilize wind, sola or wave energy.
